Amsterdam: Dutch Smoking Ban Does Not Apply To Marijuana
Starting July 1st, it will be illegal to light up a cigarette in restaurants, hotels, bars, and coffee shops in Holland, but the smoking ban does not apply to joints constructed solely of marijuana. The Dutch Health Minister Ab Klink sent a letter to this effect to the Lower House last Wednesday.
The tobacco ban would make it legal to smoke indoors only in closed off areas that provide no service. These rules only apply to tobacco, and the consumption of marijuana indoors is still allowed. So for those who roll up marijuana without adding any tobacco, toke in peace. However, many Europeans are accustomed to a mix of tobacco and marijuana in their joints, so it will be interesting to see if there is a shift in habits among the Dutch coffee shop goers.
